John P. Stopen Engineering (JPS, LLP) served as Structural and Geotechnical Engineer of Record for a $74M Spinal Cord Injury/Disease addition and renovation project at the VA Medical Center in Syracuse NY. The SCI/D project totaled nominally 165,000 GSF including 130,000 GSF of new construction and 35,000 GSF of renovation work.
The cast-in-place concrete structure was designed and detailed to resist high seismic forces as required to meet essential facility designation defined by VA standards. Floors above and below the operating rooms meet strict vibration/velocity requirements for microsurgery type use. The 5-story structure was designed for three additional floors and includes an elevated therapy pool over a large bay loading dock.
