As consultants to a Syracuse-based design-build firm, John P. Stopen Engineering, LLP served as Structural Engineer of Record for a 225,000 SF warehouse / distribution center addition. The building program included construction of a slab on grade designed to support high load, 40’ tall storage racking and high-velocity fork-trucks that required an Fmin65 flatness rating (a classification between “flat” and “very flat” per the American Concrete Institute).
The preliminary design yielded an unreinforced slab 11” thick. Using traditional methods of analysis methods and consulting with Face Consultants, the slab was re-evaluated and redesigned. The new design reduced the slab’s thickness to 8” throughout the addition and saved the project approximately $240,000.
